Money - Time to curb your enthusiasm

Money makes the world go round, does it not? As nothing comes for free these days, where would be without such a creation? Who ever invented money, really invented life I believe. Money enables us to live; to buy our dream house, to go on cruises around the Caribbean – to do what the hell we like. That's, of course if you've got money.

However, if you haven't managed to find yourself a money tree yet, you may only be able to treat yourself to a gas and electricity bill each month. And that's not a patronizing statement in the slightest either. Its merely stating a fact of how the majority of us feel with our finances. It's just bill after bill after bill isn't it?

Our money never stays with us for long, and it certainly never goes purely on our own enjoyment. I don't know about you, but I'm always paying out on everything but myself. Thats because we live in the real world unfortunately. Where we work to be paid, we get paid to pay bills. We're not living in one of these comedy program's now, where they work in a burger bar, but can still afford to live in a luxury apartment on the beach. What we as a nation must realize is that money isn't everything. Cliché, I know, but we do not need a barrel full of cash to enjoy life.Money will always be an absolute essential, but it shouldn't make our happiness.

How many multi millionaire's do you know who are undeniably happy? How many millionaire's do you know full stop (but that's beside the point). My point is that the majority you will think of (most will be those in the public eye) will not be those who you would put on the 100 most happy list (apart from Hugh Hefner, because he is obviously a very happy millionaire). So think of some. Then think of whether you would consider them truly happy or not.

Michael Jackson comes to mind for me; one of the richest men on the planet, but is renown for living one of the most sheltered lives there is. And that can't be satisfying. He doesn't show any affluence or ease in his financial security. He doesn't show any sense of fun. The most ironic point to make about Michael Jackson is that he doesn't even seem to enjoy the items in which he is able to afford. Take his Never Land Ranch for example. He doesn't appreciate it. He doesn't even use it! It's merely something for him to spend his fortune on for the sake of it, merely to boost his own selfish status within the business. Michael Jackson has his own theme park in his back garden – well thats hard to beat by anyone's standards. He doesn't need it. He can just afford it! And it hasn't made him a happy man by the looks of it. Another example is George Best. Not to mention the likes of Elvis and Marilyn Monroe, who's wealth, it could be argued, ultimately led to their downfall. David Beckham is also showing signs of unhappiness within his wealth, according to the press that is. Of course their fame is always going to be an added pressure, but you get the picture – and I'm sure you can think of many more examples.

Money is the cause of many problems for us mere mortals also. An example is when a family member dies and leaves a hefty sum to one son, but not a bean to the other. I've heard of times when this sort of thing has split up families for good. Forget about the dead bloke, where's his will? And I'm sure you know of someone who has fought because money has been owed to them? I've seen someone been physically smashed in the face over a fiver before! Perhaps you know someone who has even stolen money, due to their lack of it? People even sue these days over trivial things such as, finding a hair in their food. And why? Not for hygiene reasons at all, (and if they claim so, then they are lying through their teeth) but because there is the chance that they will receive a huge sum in compensation for their what they have been through. You get the picture?

Money is everything these days. Whether you've got it or not, every one is always hungry for a little taste of it. I'll be the first to admit that I wouldn't mind being handed some my way. But what ever happened to actually earning your money, in a decent and respectful way. A way whereby you work hard to achieve goals set by yourself. Too much hard work I suppose? People relish in the prospect of getting rich quick. Why do you think the National Lottery is so successful? People don't have to work hard for money anymore. They know that there is a way out there that means it gets handed to them on a plate. Totally effortless. One girl came up with a quick and simple way in order to clear her debts. She decided to sell her virginity over the Internet, to any Tom, Dick or Harry who would bid the most for it. Clever, original, but out right degrading in my opinion. Where are our morals when it comes to getting some cash into our pockets? They go out the window straight away.

However, I am not insinuating that wealth is a bad thing or even a corrupt thing. It's just a matter of how you get it and how you use it that can sometimes prove seedy. No one's ever going to turn it down, and everyone is secretly hoping for a little bit more of it. Just imagine, not worrying about having to pay your mortgage, your finance on your car, or even your bills! Money is the answer to a simpler life. Lets face it, how many homeless people do you see really have it easy? Money is therefore a double sided coin. It can bring
both great happiness and sadness. It depends on the owner and how wisely they choose to use it. Money makes the world go round? Indeed it does.
